About the course

One of the most remarkable features of the universe is that its complexities can often be explained through a limited set of physical laws. Theoretical physicists focus on identifying the most precise mathematical principles to understand physical phenomena across scales, from the quantum realm of microscopic particles and nanomaterials to the vast structures of curved spacetime and the cosmos. The program's core curriculum begins with topics like quantum physics and electromagnetism in the first year, progresses to quantum mechanics and relativity in the second year, and includes particle physics, atomic physics, and condensed matter physics in the third year. Students also undertake specialized modules in years two and three on subjects such as classical fields, gravitation, cosmology, and particle physics, with options like quantum information and the early universe. Project work occurs in the second and third years, while the MPhys final year features an extended research project in a prominent group, complemented by advanced modules such as gauge theory and advanced relativity and gravity. Example core modules include Dynamics and Content of the Universe, Classical Fields, and Quantum Mechanics; optional ones encompass Quantum Information, Physics of Fluids, and The Early Universe.
