About the course

Lancaster University’s joint French Studies and Theatre degree, offered by the Department of Languages and Cultures in collaboration with the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA), features an international placement in the third year. This programme enables students to develop advanced French language proficiency alongside a comprehensive understanding of France’s historical, cultural, social, and political contexts within a global framework. In Theatre, students explore innovative 20th- and 21st-century performance through a blend of practical and theoretical methods. The first year introduces French language and culture, alongside foundational theatre concepts and a group performance project, with the option to study a minor subject. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge of the French-speaking world’s culture, politics, and history, complemented by international modules and theatre options like ‘Performing the Avant-Garde’ and ‘Modern Dance’. The third year involves a placement or study abroad in a French-speaking country to enhance language skills and intercultural awareness. In the final year, students refine their French abilities and select from various optional modules in both fields. Note that beginners in languages may only study one such language due to its intensive nature.
