About the course

Chemists are exceptional problem solvers and analytical thinkers who have shaped the modern world. Our Chemistry (Industrial Placement) degree equips you with a multidisciplinary skill set, offering hands-on experience in a real chemistry workplace during Year 4. This placement enhances maturity, advances your knowledge and practical skills, and boosts job prospects upon degree completion. From Year 2, the Industrial Placement Programme Officer provides guidance on securing and preparing for placements. In Years 1 to 3, you explore core topics like chemical synthesis, physics, computation, and biology, blending organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry for a logical progression. Year 1 focuses on foundational modules and practical training in state-of-the-art labs, developing transferable skills in communication and data analysis. Year 2 deepens these with advanced subjects like quantum chemistry, while Year 3 includes research preparation and specialisations. In Year 4, you undertake a major research project with your employer, alongside distance-learning modules, though placements are not guaranteed—unsecured spots transfer to the standard MChem programme. Our department emphasises inclusive, small-group teaching for a supportive learning environment.
