Lancaster University’s BSc in Biomedical Science is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), providing a primary pathway to NHS employment as a biomedical scientist through an accredited degree and subsequent NHS laboratory training.This programme offers a comprehensive foundation in the theory and laboratory techniques of biomedical science, focusing on life processes in the context of human health and disease. It emphasises the molecular and mechanistic aspects of biology, with a highly structured curriculum taught in collaboration with clinical staff from local hospitals. Students begin with 15 modules, including Biomedical Science in Practice and Diagnosis in Biomedical Science. The second year covers subjects like Biochemistry and Medical Microbiology, while the third year explores human diseases through modules such as Cancer and Medical Genetics, with options like Neurobiology. Throughout, students undertake a lab-based research project and can apply for competitive NHS placements, potentially leading to an IBMS Certificate of Competence and HCPC registration upon completion.
