Scottish Literature encompasses the poetry, drama, fiction, and prose of Scotland from the 14th century to contemporary works. The University maintains the sole academic department in the UK dedicated exclusively to teaching and researching Scottish literature, including the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, which is producing a new multi-volume scholarly edition of Scotland’s national poet's works.Sociology examines how individuals structure their collective lives, the limitations they face, patterns of social behaviour, and the origins and impacts of social inequalities. A key strength of our Sociology programme, as noted by external reviewers and alumni, lies in its integration of sociological, criminological, and anthropological viewpoints.
