About the course

The study of English Language and Linguistics explores the structure and meaning of the English language across its history, offering insights into culture, society, and human identity. Over the past five decades, we have developed the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English, a distinctive resource for tracing the evolution of its vast and diverse vocabulary. Students also gain access to specialized laboratories for analyzing spoken and written language.Scottish Literature examines the poetry, drama, fiction, and prose of Scotland from the 14th century to contemporary works. Our university hosts the only dedicated academic unit in the UK for teaching and researching Scottish literature, including the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, which is producing a new, multi-volume scholarly edition of the works by Scotland's national poet.
