About the course

English Language and Linguistics examines the structure and meaning of the English language, past and present, revealing insights into culture, society, and human nature. Politics explores the distribution of power and influence in society and its impact on decision-making within and across countries. At the University of Glasgow, we have taught English Language and Linguistics for over 75 years, with staff who are field leaders. We developed the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English and offer dedicated labs for analysing spoken and written language. Students explore diverse topics, including international relations, political theory, and regional politics from the Middle East to Latin America and Europe, with opportunities for study abroad. Graduates excel in language, communication, and textual analysis, pursuing careers in media, publishing, marketing, speech therapy, dictionary-making, and teaching English abroad. Politics enhances research, analytical, and communication skills through workshops, alumni talks, and internships, leading to roles in civil service, government, charities, international organisations, teaching, business, media, and journalism.
