About the course

English Language and Linguistics examines the structure and meaning of the English language, past and present, revealing insights into our culture, society, and identity. Philosophy systematically addresses profound questions on knowledge, life, morality, science, and human nature through reason and argument. At the University of Glasgow, we have taught English Language and Linguistics for over 75 years, with staff who are leaders in their fields. We developed the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English, a unique resource on its semantic evolution, and maintain dedicated labs for analysing spoken and written language. We host student reading parties, often in the Highlands, and support a thriving undergraduate Philosophy Society. Graduates excel in language, communication, and textual analysis, pursuing careers in media, publishing, marketing, speech therapy, dictionary-making, and teaching English abroad. Transferable skills include evaluating arguments, analytical thinking, clear writing, and questioning assumptions. Philosophy graduates advance to postgraduate study, university teaching, or roles at Hydrogen Group (recruitment), Hopscotch Films (TV research), The Guardian (audience editor), and Civil Service fast track (Treasury, MoD).
