English Language and Linguistics examines the structure and meaning of the English language, past and present, revealing insights into our culture, society, and identity.At the University of Glasgow, we have taught this subject for over 75 years, with staff who are leaders in their fields. We developed the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English, a unique resource tracking the semantic evolution of its vast vocabulary, and maintain dedicated labs for analysing spoken and written language. Our programme offers flexibility in Honours years and an ambassador scheme for school placements to build teaching and workplace skills. Graduates excel in language, communication, and textual analysis, pursuing careers in media, publishing, marketing, speech therapy, EFL teaching (Europe, Asia, South America), finance, computing, or industry. Recent employers include PwC, Grant Thornton, Alexander Sloan, Cigna, Deloitte, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Credit Suisse. Many pursue postgraduate study.
