About the course

English Language and Linguistics at the University of Glasgow examines the structure and meaning of English, past and present, revealing insights into culture, society, and identity. History explores change and continuity in human society across time, with a broad programme spanning medieval to modern eras. Our teaching leverages expertise in Scottish, British, European, US, and global history; slavery, gender, war, intelligence, and genocide studies. With over 75 years teaching English Language and Linguistics, our staff are field leaders. We developed the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English and offer dedicated labs for language analysis, alongside small-group teaching, diverse assessments (e.g., policy papers, blogs), one-to-one feedback, and research centres in gender, war, slavery, American, Scottish, and Celtic studies.Graduates in English Language & Linguistics excel in language, communication, and textual analysis, pursuing careers in media, publishing, marketing, speech therapy, dictionary-making, and teaching English abroad (Europe, Asia, South America). History graduates enter heritage, teaching, consultancy, management, and finance. Recent History employers include HarperCollins, Police Scotland, Oxfam, Glasgow Museums, and Morgan Stanley.
