About the course

Ancient History at the University of Glasgow explores the history and culture of Greece, Rome, and the broader Mediterranean from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD, with optional study of Latin and Ancient Greek. Philosophy systematically addresses profound questions on knowledge, life, morality, science, and human nature through reason and argument.Students benefit from visits to archaeological sites and museums in Italy and Greece, with Honours students undertaking up to three weeks of fieldwork abroad. Year 3 options include study at universities in Europe (e.g., Athens, Rome), Australia, New Zealand, or North America, alongside reading parties in the Highlands and a vibrant Philosophy Society. Graduates pursue diverse careers in heritage, teaching, consultancy, finance, publishing, law, accountancy, museums, libraries, civil service, and IT. Transferable skills include critical analysis, clear thinking and writing, and questioning assumptions. Recent Philosophy graduates have joined Hydrogen Group, Hopscotch Films, The Guardian, and Civil Service fast track roles.
