About the course

In an era where technology, transportation, and a complex global economy are shrinking the world, the importance of peaceful and cooperative international relationships cannot be overstated. Our BA International Relations with Modern Languages degree equips students for global citizenship by exploring key topics such as globalisation, global institutions, development, human rights, international and regional politics, peace and conflict, political economy, security, and strategic studies. Students examine how power, institutions, and laws shape everyday life while studying a modern language—French, Spanish, or German—at advanced (post-A Level) or beginner level, alongside vocational modules in translation and professional language use. This flexible programme includes a year abroad between the second and final years, offering placements at partner institutions worldwide for study, teaching, or work experience. Modern Languages at Swansea ranks 1st in the UK for Teaching Satisfaction (Guardian University Guide 2025) and Learning Opportunities (NSS 2024), 2nd for Teaching and Student Voice (NSS 2024), and 5th overall (Guardian University Guide 2025). Students develop strong oral, written, research, and analytical skills through innovative teaching with global links. Final-year options include the Welsh Assembly Placement Scheme and Parliamentary Studies Module with speakers and House of Commons visits. Graduates pursue diverse careers in education, government, humanitarian organisations, business, media, law, and public services, with alumni at firms like Westminster Forum Projects, the Labour Party, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
