About the course

A History and Welsh degree allows you to combine an exploration of profoundly different periods and historically significant worlds with a deep study of the Welsh Language, its history and multiculturalism. Your focus may span from medieval Europe to modern Britain, and from the memory of war and conflict, to Welsh language, society and literature. Our three-year degree helps to provide graduates with a wealth of inspiring career opportunities thanks to numerous transferable skills which are highly valued by employers. History at Swansea achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 93% in the 2017 National Student Survey (NSS) and 100% of the Welsh Department's research is of an international standard or higher (REF 2014). Of those graduating from this subject area 94% are employed or in further study 6 months after graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015). Some,80% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18.Your early studies will concentrate on professional Welsh language and what it means to make history. But whether your true passion lies in medieval Europe, revolutionary America, Welsh language history, linguistics or translation, our selection of modules has it covered. The intensive first year course concentrates on developing your individual skills with high quality support.Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will have the ability to tailor your degree according to your specific interests as you progress. Swansea is a perfect gateway to the past. Within a short journey you will discover magnificent castles such as Pembroke and Manorbier, as well as medieval churches and fortresses in the Gower. The second year gives you a chance to study abroad for a semester in the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong or Singapore. Later studies are shaped by modules around your specific Welsh language and historical interests, and a substantial dissertation project. Three separate work placement programmes are available to help prepare you for graduate life.Students typically develop oral and writing skills through presenting ideas in different formats, supported by strong research and rigorous analysis. Assessment is conducted through essays, coursework, examination, presentations and a dissertation.Teaching is informed by a vibrant and supportive research environment that unites academics, postgraduates and visiting scholars around shared subject matter. Teachers of Welsh at Swansea include prominent Welsh authors and poets, including winners of the Wales Book of the Year competition.“I chose History at Swansea as the course offers a great variation of topics and the modules are really interesting. They stretch from the ancient empires of China and India, to the Second World War. The expertise of the lecturers is second to none.” – Alistair Kirk.
