About the course

Our Early Childhood Studies with Early Years Practitioner Status programme, accredited by Social Care Wales, enables students to work with infants, toddlers, young children, and their families. Over three years, participants complete at least 700 hours of placement in settings like early childhood centres and primary schools, demonstrating competency in National Occupational Standards. This degree prepares graduates for professional roles in early years education, granting Early Years Practitioner Status for immediate workforce entry. As part of the School of Social Sciences, it combines practical experience with theoretical knowledge, boasting strong rankings: 3rd in the UK for Research Quality (Complete University Guide 2024) and 4th overall, with 95% of graduates employed or in further study 15 months post-graduation (HESA 2023).The programme features compulsory modules across themes such as child development, policy, play, and leadership, integrated with 700 hours of placement. In the first year, learning occurs through lectures and tutorials; the second year involves seminars and group work; and the final year includes independent research like dissertations. Assessment methods vary, including essays, presentations, vlogs, and reports, fostering research and communication skills. Career options span early years teaching, support work, and further study, such as PGCE for teaching qualifications. For more details, contact study@swansea.ac.uk or visit our course webpage.
