About the course

This four-year BA in American Studies and History at Swansea University offers an in-depth exploration of US culture, history, and politics, alongside British, European, and world history. Students can customise the flexible curriculum to focus on areas such as American film, music, race, gender, civil rights, international relations, and political economy, covering topics from colonial America to the Trump era, and from the Crusades to 20th-century Europe. Teaching draws on world-leading research, guest seminars, and modules by visiting American professors, with opportunities to network via over 150 American students annually. The third year features a year-long industrial placement for practical experience. The programme develops transferable skills in research, analysis, presentation, and problem-solving, leading to careers in education, heritage, media, law, and public services. Swansea ranks first in the UK for American Studies graduate prospects (Times Good University Guide 2024) and 11th for History research impact (REF 2021). Based on the scenic Singleton Campus, students can join societies like the History and American Studies groups.
