Course summary

Starting in September 2024, the School of Arts and Humanities, which includes this course, will move to our City Campus. The course itself will remain the same, with no changes to its content. If you've already applied for this course, you should have received an email explaining how this move might impact you. Communication & Society and Linguistics are two subjects that have a natural synergy. You'll become aware of the way that Communication & Society allow us to make sense of the ongoing transformations which our personalities, technologies and societies are undergoing. The in-depth knowledge of language and the social functions which it provides will enhance and directly influence your understanding of human communications and identity. This course is ideal for anyone who is interested in communication and the structure of language, the meaning of language and the social functions of language. Linguistics at NTU has a 94% student satisfaction rate (NSS 2020). LINGUISTICS is the study of human language. This course will equip you with the vital tools needed to analyse language and to carry out your own research. You will become aware of the immense power that our language has to construct and to constrain meaning. To study this course we will not expect you to have prior knowledge of grammar; foreign languages; or technical terminology. Linguistics will provide you with the knowledge to analyse language on a deep scale to understand the power that language has to construct meaning in societies. You'll examine the latest developments in clinical linguistics, media discourse, child language acquisition and research in languages and gender. COMMUNICATION & SOCIETY will allow you to examine the rapidly changing transformations of society, people and technologies. You'll also examine the evolving media through which communication takes place. This course will provide you with the necessary tools which are needed to understand various communications, societies and the ability to construct meaning of language and to carry out your own research. You'll develop effective theoretical and practical communication, critical thinking, problem solving techniques and analytical skills. Our recent graduates have gone on to work in; social work, healthcare, finance, customer and public relations, journalism and broadcasting.
