Course summary

Starting in September 2024, the School of Arts and Humanities, which includes this course, will move to our City Campus. The course itself will remain the same, with no changes to its content. If you've already applied for this course, you should have received an email explaining how this move might impact you. This degree will provide you with an understanding of diverse peoples, nations and ideas from medieval and early modern right through to contemporary history within Britain and across to the Americas, Asia and the Far East. History makes a great joint honours course combined with Communication and Society as you'll debate the reasons as to why our personalities, technologies and societies are continuously undergoing transformations whilst drawing on areas of history and philosophy. HISTORY at NTU offers exciting opportunities to discover and understand the past through a range of skills and approaches. This course offers a diverse curriculum, covering periods from AD 700 to the present day. The academic team at NTU teaches specialist modules informed by their own research specialisms, including: The Crusades; Nazi Germany; Aztec and Inca civilisations; American and British History; and Museum and Heritage Management. The course offers a range of ways to make sense of the past and how it has impacted present day by utilising a selection of approaches and skills. This course will develop and deepen your understanding of diverse peoples, nations and ideas. 94% of History joint honours students would recommend studying at NTU (NSS 2020). History at NTU pays particular attention to developing your personal attributes and employability awareness, with 92% of History joint honours undergraduates in work or further study within just six months of finishing their degree (DLHE 2016/17). COMMUNICATION & SOCIETY will allow you to examine the rapidly changing transformations in society, people and technologies. Therefore, it's important that you understand the different forms of social communication that take place between individuals, organisations, humanity and nature. This course will also explore the way that communication takes shape through the evolving use of the media. The course uses an equal amount of theoretical and practical aspects of communication including non-verbal and unconscious communication. Both subjects will teach you through a variation of lectures, tutorials and workshops and you'll partake in discussions and group work. This joint honours degree will allow you to possess well-rounded skills which are actively sought after by employers such as; interpersonal skills, creativity, imagination, independent learning and an open mind. You'll be able to analyse various forms of communication such as; non-verbal, spoken, unconscious communication and global communication. Both subjects will help enhance your analytical and problem solving skills.
