Over the past five years, automotive technologies have evolved dramatically, with electrification and connectivity driving industry advancements. Manufacturers are under pressure to adopt digital engineering to streamline processes and reduce costs. Loughborough's Automotive Engineering programme, offered by our renowned Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, provides specialised knowledge aligned with these trends. Drawing on over 50 years of industry collaboration, the course integrates automotive-specific examples from the start, covering topics like new powertrain architectures, battery technology, machine intelligence, and foundational areas such as aerodynamics and materials.Practical elements are central, including hands-on sessions at facilities like HORIBA MIRA for data analysis on vehicle dynamics. Students develop teamwork and management skills through projects, such as designing future vehicles and conducting original research. The MEng and BEng degrees share the first two years; the MEng extends with deeper study and language options, typically taking four years (or five with placement), while BEng is three or four years. Transfer between degrees is possible up to the end of year two, with assessments mixing exams, coursework, and projects.
For a full list of areas studied, see the 'What You'll Study' section of the course page on our website.
