About the course

Lancaster University’s MSci in Theoretical Physics with Mathematics (Study Abroad), offered in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, integrates core physics, specialised theoretical physics, and pure mathematics. This programme builds a strong foundation in the mathematical underpinnings of physics, such as the role of Hilbert spaces in quantum mechanics. In the first year, students explore essential physics topics like Quantum Physics and Electromagnetism, alongside mathematics including geometry, calculus, numbers, relations, and probability. In years two and three, the curriculum expands with theoretical physics courses and advanced mathematics, such as group theory and differential equations.During the third year, students study at partner universities in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, or Europe, taking equivalent courses to those at Lancaster. The university will endeavour to secure placements, but availability is not guaranteed; if unavailable, students may transfer to the standard MSci programme. Lancaster assumes no financial responsibility for the abroad experience. In the final year, participants engage in advanced modules like Quantum Information and Advanced Gravity and Relativity, culminating in an extended research project on topics such as Gravitational Waves or Quantum Computation.
