Lancaster’s joint Theatre and Chinese Studies degree, offered by the Department of Languages and Cultures in collaboration with the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA), includes an international placement in year three. This programme enables students to develop advanced Chinese language skills while exploring China’s historical, cultural, social, and political contexts globally. Chinese can be studied at beginner or advanced levels, complemented by practical and academic approaches to innovative 20th- and 21st-century theatre, drama, dance, and performance. In the first year, students explore Chinese language and culture alongside introductory theatre concepts, culminating in a group performance project, plus a minor subject. Year two builds on language skills through modules like 'Shaping Chinese Society: Moments and Movements' and global comparative studies, combined with theatre options such as 'Devised Theatre'. The third year involves an international placement in a Chinese-speaking country for enhanced language proficiency and intercultural awareness. Final-year studies consolidate language expertise with specialist modules on Sinophone literature and film, alongside LICA choices like 'Contemporary European Postdramatic Theatre', and opportunities for integrated projects. Note that beginners-level language study is intensive, limiting students to one such language, with options restricted accordingly.
