About the course

Lancaster University’s Sociology program equips students with in-demand skills in analysis, communication, research, and teamwork, opening doors to rewarding careers. Through a four-year option, students gain practical experience via a 9-12 month placement in relevant organizations, while receiving academic and pastoral support. The curriculum allows customization with modules on topics like social justice, gender, environment, migration, race, criminology, and film, delivered by expert staff who influence policy through media, blogs, and research. Students can design dissertations on areas such as autism and social media or masculinity and food consumption, complemented by field trips and societies.Sociology examines pressing issues like gender inequalities, identity through consumption, and the societal impacts of crises such as the cost-of-living. The program promotes interdisciplinary learning to address complex problems from multiple angles, fostering critical research skills for real-world application. The placement year, between the second and final year, offers paid, graduate-level roles to build professional networks and employability, with university support for securing opportunities. If a placement isn’t found, students can transition to a three-year program.
