Physical Geography at Lancaster explores the processes and patterns in the natural environment, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere, with a strong focus on practical work. Students investigate past environmental changes, current processes, and future predictions. Situated between rural northern landscapes and cities like Liverpool and Manchester, Lancaster offers ideal access to unique UK geographic areas, with hands-on field trips to sites such as the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, and international destinations like Switzerland and Croatia.In the first year, core modules provide a broad introduction to physical geography, alongside options to study subjects like Environmental Science or Biology for enhanced skills. The second year builds expertise in areas such as Geographic Information Systems and hydrology, with optional trips to Spain. A placement year follows, offering professional experience with university support, before the final year culminates in a supervised dissertation on original research, plus advanced module choices including fieldwork in Croatia and Switzerland.
