German Studies and Linguistics, BA (Hons), with study abroad

This four-year combined degree, offered by the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of Linguistics and English Language, includes a year abroad for immersive language and cultural experience. No prior German knowledge is required, as an intensive course is available for beginners. The program fosters fluency in German Studies while enhancing linguistic awareness through concurrent study of grammar and structures in English, German, and other languages.The first and second years comprise core and optional modules. The third year abroad deepens intercultural sensitivity and language skills through partner university studies or work placements, with departmental support for preparation. Returning to Lancaster, the fourth year advances German proficiency to C1/C2 levels, allowing specialization and the option of a dissertation. Note that beginners may only study one language at this level, affecting first-year module choices.
