About the course

Geoscientists play a vital role in addressing global challenges like climate change, sustainable development, resource management, and natural hazards. This degree integrates geoscience training with environmental contexts, equipping students with knowledge of key issues and solutions. It examines natural and human-made environments, exploring controlling factors, historical evolution, and future changes, while drawing on expertise in areas such as volcanology, geophysics, hydrogeology, and glaciology. The first year covers foundational Earth and environmental sciences, including geology, atmosphere, weather, and climate. Specialisation begins in the second year with Earth science topics, allowing focus on areas like geological hazards or glacial systems. Core modules prepare for a third-year dissertation, which may involve fieldwork, lab research, or modelling. Students can also undertake an optional placement year, gaining professional experience with university support, alongside opportunities for field courses in locations like Mount Etna and the Lake District. Throughout, emphasis is placed on transferable skills such as communication, IT, data handling, and environmental analysis.
