This Joint Honours degree enables students to deepen their knowledge of a modern European language and its cultural contexts while exploring diverse historical periods and themes.In the first year, students build foundational language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—alongside studies in literature, film, art, history, and politics. Subsequent years allow for advanced language development, cultural specialization, and focused history modules. A year abroad offers opportunities for immersion as an assistant, student, or on placement, fostering fluency and personal growth. The final year includes specialized language options, such as translation, and a self-chosen dissertation on historical or cultural topics.First-year modules encompass core language courses in French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish, plus electives like Reading French Literature or Connected Histories. Assessment comprises essays, projects, examinations for cultural and historical components, and oral/written tests for language, culminating in a 12,000-word dissertation and a year abroad assignment.
