This multidisciplinary degree offers advanced knowledge of Japanese language and culture. Students undertake a core language module each year, with no prior knowledge required; however, a pathway exists for those with A-level or equivalent qualifications. Elective modules from fields such as Anthropology, Education, Government, Economics, and Theology allow exploration of Japan-related topics, alongside additional language options like Chinese, Korean, or European languages. The third year involves studying at a Japanese university, providing immersive cultural experience, with the option to extend the program to five years via a placement. In the final year, students complete a 12,000-word dissertation synthesizing their studies. Year one core modules include Japanese Language 1A or 1B, plus introductions to Japanese and East Asian culture. Assessments comprise oral, written, and listening exams for language modules, essays and projects for electives, and a year-abroad assignment.
