About the course

This dynamic BSc in Archaeology integrates scientific laboratory disciplines with engaging fieldwork, offering a comprehensive overview of the field and thorough training in techniques such as DNA analysis, isotopic studies, GIS, geoarchaeology, and skeletal analysis. Students access state-of-the-art facilities and expert guidance, developing transferable skills in data management, critical thinking, and presentation. The program includes opportunities for professional accreditation from the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and culminates in a research dissertation.Core modules in the first year, including Introduction to Archaeological Methods and Archaeology in Britain, build foundational knowledge through tutorials, practicals, and fieldwork. Assessment encompasses coursework, presentations, hands-on exercises, and the dissertation, which constitutes a third of final-year marks.

What you will learn

Year 1 Core modules: Introduction to Archaeological Methods provides you with a grounding in a range of scientific methods and techniques used in archaeology today, and will help you to develop a critical awareness of the potential and limitations of each. Archaeology in Britain gives you a wide-ranging introduction to how archaeologists work, how sites are found and excavated, how archaeological information is generated, theorised and interpreted, and the issues facing archaeology today. It will give you the basic study skills for library work, essays, tutorials and computing. Archaeology Practicals introduces field and laboratory techniques for the recording and analysis of primary materials, sites and monuments, using group work wherever possible. Scientific Methods in Archaeology 1 provides a grounding in a range of scientific methods and techniques used in archaeology today. It will help you develop a critical awareness of the potential and limitations of data and its analysis when applied to archaeological problems.
