About the course

Our applied Psychology degree offers a comprehensive exploration of the mind and human behaviour through diverse perspectives and methodologies. Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), it equips graduates meeting the criteria to register with the BPS. Students apply scientific principles to societal issues, developing effective communication skills, while gaining highly valued abilities in communication, computing, numeracy, teamwork, and critical thinking. This prepares you for careers in education, health, civil service, private sectors, or further study, with options for single honours or combined pathways, including interdisciplinary modules. The programme includes a Professional Placement Year between the second and final years, involving 9-13 months of work experience, which you source with careers support. In year one, you cover core psychological areas and research skills; year two delves into biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology with optional modules; and the final year features a dissertation and consultancy project. Assessment comprises essays, debates, research reports, group presentations, and examinations, ensuring a well-rounded qualification.

What you will learn

In year one, you'll begin by exploring the main areas of psychological science, the ways in which you can use psychology in your life, and controversial issues around race and gender. In addition, you’ll be introduced to the research and data analysis skills that you'll need to become a scientist in your own right. In your second year, you'll take on further depth and challenges as you advance your understanding of research design and analysis. You'll take a closer look at biological, cognitive, developmental and social psychology. Choose from optional modules based around the specialities of course staff. Your third year is a Professional Placement Year. In your final year, you'll embark upon your dissertation, working one-to-one with a member of staff on an original psychology research project. You'll also learn about creative enterprise with psychological science, completing a consultancy project of your own. In addition, you'll continue to enjoy the same opportunities to study specialist topics as in year two.
