About the course

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health, offered by the Department of Health Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, requires formal declaration of major for admission. Students must complete 120 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00, along with college writing and university mathematics requirements. General education entails ten courses, with two from each of five foundational areas, including at least one lab science course in the Natural and Mathematical Sciences category, and no more than two courses in the same discipline.Major requirements include 58 credit hours with grades of C or better, comprising 34 credit hours of core courses such as General Biology I and II, Bioethics, Introduction to Public Health, and Biostatistics. The remaining 24 credit hours are electives, with at least one course from each of four clusters: Global Health, Health Science, Policy and Program Planning, and Social and Community Health, ensuring no more than 3 credit hours from 200-level courses. American University also offers combined bachelor's and master's degree options for eligible students.
