About the course

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies is the School of Communication’s only cross-divisional, interdisciplinary undergraduate program. This liberal arts-oriented major integrates elements from journalism, public communication, and film and media arts, reflecting the convergence of communication disciplines. It is designed for students seeking a broad, intellectually rigorous curriculum that explores the political, social, cultural, global, and historical aspects of communication. Students concentrate in one of four areas: History of Media, International Media, Media and Government, or Media and Society. The program provides in-depth scholarly exposure and foundational skills, preparing graduates for advanced studies, research, or professional roles in communication fields.Admission requires applying to American University and selecting the major upon enrollment. Current students need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 to formally declare the major by the end of their sophomore year; those unable to meet this standard cannot take School of Communication courses after 60 credit hours.
