Media & Communications More about Media & Communications

We live in an age where media and communications rule our everyday existence. Unless you have been living in a cave – which is not a bad thing, depending on how you look at it - media and communications are in our faces in the form of news, advertising, and social media like Facebook and Twitter.

Studying Media and Communications lets you examine how we can communicate effectively and how this shapes society. Ultimately you will ponder if media reflects society or does society reflect the media? You will develop an understanding of how we communicate by touching on linguistics (the study of language) and semiotics (the study of signs), and how that fits into a cultural, political, commercial and historical context.

Being a student of Media and Communications should give you an informed and critical approach to help you and your employer broadcast the desired message to the intended audience. You should be able to know the various types of media available to you and the effectiveness and reach of each media employed.

The course will inevitably involve some intern work where you will be placed in the media industry to work long hours for little or no pay. While this will not guarantee you long-term work, it will let you have an up close insight into the industry.
