Material Science More about Material Science

Certain periods of Civilization have been named “The Bronze Age” or “The Stone Age” to mark the importance of how that specific material impacted mankind during that time. This may seem irrelevant in this age of Information Technology, but Material Science lies at the core of our modern World.

Material Science studies the structure and properties of materials, and the relationships between them. It examines what controls and affects internal structures, and the processes that can alter them. A student of Materials Science will question why materials act the way they do and how certain processes will dramatically alter one material’s attributes. Materials Science will put you in the forefront and introduce newly discovered materials, while examining the variety of uses for existing ones.

The age that we live in can be categorized as the “Materials Age” as Material Science allows us to constantly develop new materials that greatly impact our lives – at times unseen by the common man. Planes today fly further and faster in part due to lighter materials that weigh less (thus consuming less fuel) and yet are strong enough to build larger planes.

The study of Material Science requires a firm foundation in Physics and Chemistry. Adding to that, a student will apply Mathematics to their skill in either producing new materials or making current ones. This is all done to make better materials pushing mankind ahead in fields such as Communications technology, the Computer Industry, and Biotechnology.
