Film & Sound Technology More about Film & Sound Technology

It could be that you have a passion for visual storytelling through the medium of film and video or you’re one of those people who can’t seem to watch a movie or television show without imagining all the technical hustle and bustle taking place behind the scenes, distracting you from the content of what you’re supposed to be focussing on.

Either way, pursuing a degree in Film and Sound Technology would very likely already have crossed your mind.

So what exactly will you be exposed to in such a degree programme?

Through the course, you will acquire the skills and expertise needed for you to to work on films, television productions, news broadcasts, commercials and the likes. For instance, you’ll be taught how to operate cameras, lighting equipment and audio devices and how to use an array of post-production editing software to transform and manipulate films, videos, sound and images.

In most Film and SoundTechnology degree programmes, you will also be exposed to less technical modules such as scriptwriting, set design, and directing - to make your education in the discipline more well-rounded.

The majority of Film and Sound degree courses require you to produce a portfolio of sorts to qualify for graduation, so be prepared to invest copious amounts of time and effort working on large-scale final-year projects and on all your creative undertakings in general as an undergraduate.

In terms of career prospects, your choices within the media industry are fairly varied - you could look into becoming a film/television director, producer, sound engineer, cinematographer, scriptwriter, set designer or post-production editor.

So, if you happen to have a passion and appreciation for all things film, video and and sound technology, this is the degree for you. Well, stop sitting around - take some (lights, camera, recorder) action and start applying!
