About the course

From classic cassette tapes and the vinyl revival to global streaming services, recorded sound has become the primary way we experience music. At the University of York, the Music and Sound Recording (BA) programme recognises that music and production are integrated art forms. It offers flexibility to develop tailored intellectual, technical, and musical skills, with practical training in audio engineering and recording techniques vital for music technology careers. Core modules cover recording, mixing, and mastering across genres from pop and rock to classical. A modular structure allows customisation to your interests and aspirations, including Music department options and course-specific modules. Access five studios featuring 60 years of technology—vintage tape machines, analogue synthesizers, high-end consoles, and digital workstations. Supported by a dedicated careers service and expanding internships, graduates secure roles in studios, radio, Dolby Atmos mixing, hardware/software development, and arts practice.
