About the course

Ninety-four percent of our Biological Sciences research is rated world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021). This Medical Neuroscience course explores the structure and function of the human brain and nervous system, focusing on conditions like epilepsy, strokes, and schizophrenia. Students will apply this knowledge to understand and treat neurological disorders through seminars, hands-on lab work, and training in modern techniques, while developing skills in computing, programming, data analysis, and communication. You'll join a supportive community in the School of Life Sciences, where expert teaching is informed by research in medicine, neuroanatomy, genes, and development. As the UK's first university to offer a neurobiology degree and the only one with an undergraduate Medical Neuroscience program, Sussex provides close ties to Brighton & Sussex Medical School, including a guaranteed interview for Medicine if criteria are met.Career opportunities include pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, academic research, science writing, and engagement. The integrated Masters year offers advanced training through an individual research project, building theoretical and practical skills for research-related roles. We also provide this as a three-year BSc. Located on a scenic campus near the South Downs National Park and Brighton, with easy access to London, Sussex fosters innovation across science, policy, and global impact.
