Ninety-five percent of our Mathematical Sciences research is rated world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021). This flexible MMath course explores how mathematics addresses real-world challenges, such as modelling infectious diseases, social media trends, and queues. In the first year, students derive and prove core mathematical principles, then advance into areas like mathematical biology, cryptography, probability, financial mathematics, and partial differential equations. You'll develop analytical and modelling skills using tools like MATLAB, Python, and R, with opportunities for placements and support from a close-knit department, including dedicated academic and careers advisers.Accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, this programme suits those pursuing research or specialised fields like data science or finance. We also offer versions with research placements or as a three-year BSc. Based on our green campus near the South Downs National Park and Brighton, the University of Sussex fosters innovation and global impact through its stimulating courses and research.
