Ninety-five percent of our Mathematical Sciences research has been rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021). This course explores how mathematics addresses real-world challenges, such as modelling infectious diseases, social media trends, and queue behaviours. Students collaborate with experts whose work influences areas like COVID forecasting and flood prediction. In the first year, you will derive and prove key calculus concepts, then advance into topics including mathematical biology, cryptography, probability, financial mathematics, and partial differential equations. The programme offers flexibility to specialise while building core skills in analytical modelling using tools like MATLAB, Python, and R.Our supportive department fosters a close community with personalised lecturer guidance and career support. You will develop employable skills in data analysis, problem-solving, coding, and teamwork, leading to roles such as business analyst, data engineer, or software developer. The course meets educational requirements for Chartered Mathematician accreditation and is available as a four-year MMath or with research placements. Located on a scenic campus near Brighton & Hove, with easy access to London, the University of Sussex drives innovation across science, policy, and beyond.
