About the course

94% of our research in Biological Sciences was assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).Genetics is profoundly impacting society, revolutionizing conservation, agriculture, biotechnology, and medicine through advances in contemporary genetics. At the University of Sussex, students explore how these developments enhance understanding of the genetic basis of human health, transform disease treatment via technological solutions, and pave the way for personalized medicine. In the School of Life Sciences, you'll join a supportive community of students and academics, learning from experts in cancer biology, neurological disorders, and population ecology. Teaching draws on cutting-edge research, covering topics from cell and molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics to structural and developmental biology and neuroscience. You'll gain hands-on experience with modern experimental techniques in our labs, develop data analysis and communication skills—including computing and programming—and undertake an independent research project. Graduates are equipped for diverse careers in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, the NHS, healthcare, science writing, publishing, and engagement. The course is available as a three-year BSc or four-year MSci. Located on a beautiful green campus edging the South Downs National Park, near Brighton & Hove, Gatwick Airport, and London, Sussex fosters innovation in courses, research, culture, and student support, with alumni contributing globally across society.
