About the course

Our research in Computer Science and Informatics achieved 100% world-leading or internationally excellent impact (REF 2021). This course at the University of Sussex explores the scientific foundations of intelligence in animals and machines, covering core computer science principles, adaptive behaviour, and intelligent systems applications. Students can tailor their studies to focus on technology or cognitive science—the interdisciplinary examination of intelligence and the mind—while gaining practical experience through an optional industry year. Studies take place in advanced Future Technologies Labs, featuring high-spec computers and collaborative workspaces. The program is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, fulfilling academic requirements for Chartered IT Professional status. To enhance employability, students may apply for an optional placement, supported by our careers team in finding employers, drafting applications, and preparing for interviews. If unsuccessful, students seamlessly transition to the non-placement version. Located on a scenic campus near the South Downs National Park and Brighton & Hove, with easy access to Gatwick Airport and London, the University of Sussex fosters innovation across research, culture, and global contributions. For detailed modules, refer to the course page.
