About the course

The three-year BSc Physics degree offers a comprehensive education in modern physics, covering essential topics such as relativity, quantum mechanics, and electromagnetism. These principles enable precise understanding of the universe, from galactic scales to subatomic particles. The programme provides flexibility through optional modules each year, allowing students to tailor their studies, with the option to switch to an MPhys degree until the end of the second year. Access to advanced facilities, including a rooftop observatory and photonics labs, enhances learning, while the course prepares graduates for diverse careers in fields like engineering, research, and data analysis. Accredited by the Institute of Physics, it also develops transferable skills such as problem-solving and computing.Typical modules span core areas: Year one includes Electricity and Magnetism, Motion and Relativity, and introductory physics skills; Year two covers Classical Mechanics, Quantum Physics, and Statistical Mechanics; Year three features Atomic Physics, a synoptic examination, and a research project. Assessment combines exams, coursework, and lab work in the first two years, shifting to primarily examinations and project-based evaluations in the final year, including reports and oral assessments.
