About the course

This integrated Master's degree combines mechanical engineering with biological and medical aspects of healthcare technologies. The initial two years cover foundational principles of mechanical engineering, including law, management, systems design, modelling, and computing, to guide products from concept to market. In years three and four, students delve into human body mechanics, medical technologies, and human factors, undertaking an individual project in year three and advanced modules with a group design project in year four. An optional industrial placement year provides paid, real-world experience to enhance employability and professional skills. The program includes typical modules such as introductory engineering design, fluid mechanics, biomaterials, and computational methods in biomedical engineering. Assessment involves unseen examinations, coursework like laboratory reports and essays, and projects, with the placement year evaluated through a reflective report. Courses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Engineering Council, and EUR-ACE, offering a pathway to chartered status.

What you will learn

Typical modules include: Year one: An Introduction to Engineering Design; Electrical and Electronics Systems; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment; Mechanics, Structures and Materials; Mechanical Systems Analysis; ThermoFluids. Year two: Engineering Management and Law; Fluid Mechanics; Materials and Structures; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment Part II; Mechanics, Machines and Vibration; Systems Design and Computing; Thermodynamics; Electronics and Control. Year three: Individual Project; Biomaterials; Engineering Design with Management; Finite Element Analysis in Solid Mechanics; Heat Transfer and Applications; Introduction to Biomedical Engineering; and Orthopaedic Biomechanics. Year four: Group Design Project; Biological Materials and Biomedical Devices; Computational Methods in Biomedical Engineering Design; Manufacturing and Materials; Materials, Manufacturing, and Supply Chains; plus module options to deepen your knowledge.
