About the course

This Mathematics MMath programme provides an in-depth exploration of pure and applied mathematics, guided by leading researchers, with topics ranging from cryptography to black holes. Students develop advanced mathematical and statistical skills, preparing them for careers in finance, commerce, industry, and research. The first three years cover core areas such as algebra, calculus, number theory, statistics, and mathematical modelling, aligning with related courses. In the fourth year, participants delve into advanced topics like representation theory, harmonic analysis, and Lie groups, while having the option to specialise in statistics through pathways including machine learning and survival analysis. As part of the programme, students study advanced research methods in algebra, analysis, geometry, and topology; undertake an individual research project; and utilise tools like Python and R in a dedicated student centre. Teaching combines lectures and workshops by experts in fields such as group theory and experimental design. Assessment includes coursework, tests, and exams, with opportunities to tailor studies through other pathways for a more general or specialised focus.
