This course, previously known as BEng Ship Science with Industrial Placement Year, focuses on the design, construction, and testing of vessels and offshore structures for transport, recreation, and marine resource utilization. Spanning three years, it delivers a comprehensive grounding in naval architecture and marine engineering through theoretical studies, practical laboratories, design modules, and projects. The initial two years align with the MEng program, building a strong foundation in the science and engineering of marine vehicles, structures, and design. In the third year, students advance via specialized naval architecture modules and an individual project, while an optional industrial placement year provides paid professional experience to boost employability.Assessment involves unseen examinations, coursework such as problem-solving exercises, lab reports, essays, and projects. Typical modules include foundational topics in years one and two, like Basic Naval Architecture and Hydrodynamics, and advanced options in year three, such as Marine Hydrodynamics and Ship Manoeuvring. The program is accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, Institution of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, and Institution of Mechanical Engineers, offering a pathway to chartered status.
Typical modules include: Year one: Basic Naval Architecture; An Introduction to Engineering Design; Electrical and Electronics Systems; Engineering Mathematics Workshop; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment; Mechanics, Structures and Materials; ThermoFluids. Year two: Engineering Management and Law; Hydrodynamics; Materials and Structures; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment Part II; Ship Resistance and Propulsion; Ship Design and Economics; Ship Structural Design and Production; and Systems Design and Computing for Ships. Year three: Individual Project; Marine Craft Concept Design; Marine Engineering; Marine Hydrodynamics; Marine Structures; Ship Manoeuvring and Control; plus module options.
