Geography offers a comprehensive understanding of the processes shaping our physical world through a three-year BSc degree at Southampton. Students explore natural and physical science aspects, including climate change's historical and future impacts, landscape interpretation, remote sensing, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for spatial data analysis. A compulsory second-year overseas field course, such as in southern Spain or Tenerife (included in fees), develops research skills, with optional trips to alpine or tropical regions enhancing expertise. The programme, accredited by the Royal Geographical Society and ranked 6th in the UK (Guardian University Guide, 2024), prioritises employability, with 100% of graduates entering employment or further study within 15 months (Graduate Outcomes 2020/2021), leading to careers in public policy, environmental consultancy, teaching, and more.Fieldwork is integral, featuring non-residential trips like the New Forest in year one, and optional international excursions to places like Switzerland or Cambodia in year three. Core modules span topics such as "A Global World," "Dynamic Landscapes," and advanced GIS and remote sensing, alongside a final-year research project. Assessment includes lectures, tutorials, coursework, essays, presentations, and exams, supported by academic tutors to build versatile skills for post-graduation success.
Field work is an important element of your degree and you will have the option to participate in projects in each year of study. You will also complete core modules (examples listed below) and choose additional optional modules each year to shape your degree to your interests.
