About the course

Geography offers insights into the complexities of our world through a three-year BA degree. Students explore how economic, social, and cultural processes influence health, wellbeing, and human-environment interactions, while utilizing tools like Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to examine global similarities, differences, and challenges. The programme allows customization after the first year and includes a compulsory second-year field trip to locations such as Amsterdam (covered by fees), with optional trips to Europe or Southeast Asia. Accredited by the Royal Geographical Society, it emphasizes employability, with graduates entering fields like public policy, environmental consultancy, and GIS roles; 100% were employed or in further study 15 months post-graduation (Graduate Outcomes 2020/2021). Ranked 6th in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2024.Fieldwork is integral, with opportunities each year, including non-residential courses in the first year and optional international trips in the third. Core modules span topics like global issues, landscapes, and research methods, with students selecting additional options. Assessment involves diverse methods such as essays, projects, presentations, and exams, supported by lectures, tutorials, and academic guidance to build versatile skills.

What you will learn

Field work is an important element of your degree and you will have the option to participate in projects in each year of study. You will also complete core modules (examples listed below) and choose additional optional modules each year to shape your degree to your interests. Year One: Field work, Non-residential one-week field course, looking at both human and physical geography topics. Core Modules: A Global World Curiosity, Creativity and Communication Dynamic Landscapes Society, Culture & Space The Earth System Year Two: Field Work One-week overseas field trip (compulsory and covered by your fees) previous trips have been to Amsterdam. Core Modules: GIS for Geographers and Environmental Scientists Researcg Project Preparation Researching Human Geography Year Three: Field Work Optional field trips further afield.
