Film and English, BA (Hons), with study abroad

At the University of Southampton, the Film and English programme examines storytelling across literature and cinema, from Jane Austen to Harry Potter, highlighting their interconnections. Students analyse texts from early poetry to modern novels while critically evaluating films in genres such as film noir, horror, science fiction, documentary, and animation. The course explores broader contexts like performance, music, science, and philosophy, supported by advanced digital humanities facilities including virtual reality, 3D scanners, and an immersive audio-visual centre. In the third year, students study abroad at partner universities in South Korea, Sweden, Ireland, or the Czech Republic, engaging with distinct film cultures.The programme features flexible modules on topics like World Dramas, Contemporary British Cinema, and Film Noir, allowing students to tailor their studies. Learning occurs through lectures, tutorials, and independent projects, with assessments including essays, presentations, and dissertations. Academic tutors provide ongoing support and feedback to aid development.
