About the course

This degree provides a comprehensive opportunity to develop a deep understanding of economic theory alongside data science methodologies, equipping graduates for careers in economics or finance. The programme delivers rigorous training in economic principles and their applications, complemented by essential data science skills, such as analysing large datasets and applying algorithmic or machine learning techniques. In the first year, students will utilise Bloomberg trading terminals in the Financial Lab to earn a Bloomberg Markets Concepts qualification and engage in experimental labs to apply fundamental economic concepts. Additional options include studying abroad, undertaking a year in industry, participating in innovation projects, or gaining exemptions from professional bodies like accounting institutes and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Graduates are prepared for roles at organisations such as Goldman Sachs, HSBC, PwC, and Bloomberg, or for advanced studies. The curriculum covers core topics in Economics with Data Science, allowing students to select pathways based on their background and interests; first-year modules vary depending on prior economics study. Examples include Economics with Experiments, Industrial Economics, and Choice and Decision. For a full list of modules, refer to the course page. Assessment methods encompass coursework, lab reports, essays, dissertations, group and individual projects, self-assessments, teamwork exercises, and written exams.
