About the course

This three-year BEng in Artificial Intelligence develops essential skills in numerical software development, allowing students to apply mathematical principles in designing and implementing AI, machine learning, and data science systems for industries like transport, healthcare, and entertainment. The programme features core modules in foundational AI skills, alongside optional modules drawn from world-leading research in areas such as Deep Learning, Computer Vision, and Robotics. It supports career growth through strong employer ties, career fairs, and startup incubation. The curriculum enables tailored learning, with core modules in the first two years covering algorithms, programming, and mathematics, including an interdisciplinary group project on intelligent robotics. In the third year, students undertake advanced Machine Learning and individual projects exploring innovative technologies. Assessment methods include written exams, in-class tests, design exercises, programming tasks, oral presentations, and group work.

What you will learn

This three-year programme will enable you to pursue a career in a wide range of industries that can benefit from AI. It has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests. During the first two years you will undertake a series of core modules, for example Algorithms and analysis; High- and Low-level Programming, Mathematics and Systematic design. In your second year, for your Interdisciplinary Group Project, you will develop an intelligent robotic system, working with computer engineering students on co-development of software and supporting hardware. In your third year, you will be taking an advanced Machine Learning module; this module covers content that would traditionally be seen at a Master's level in a CS degree. It follows on from two foundational machine learning modules in year two, which are more representative of the 3rd year content in a CS degree. In your third year, you can also choose from a wide range of optional modules that reflect a specialist area of AI. You will also work on an individual project with the potential to explore cutting edge technologies and innovative applications.
