About the course

This programme equips students with essential knowledge and skills to understand contemporary societies and their transformations. It explores the social processes that shape individuals, groups, and institutions, while examining social order and change. Students will connect theoretical concepts to key dimensions of social differentiation, including gender, class, race, age, sexuality, and education. The curriculum extends to topics like crime, media, politics, and education, demonstrating how sociological insights can address modern social issues. Interactive small-group teaching fosters deep discussions, enhancing awareness of how societies influence individuals and vice versa, and the complexities of social problems and policy responses. The programme develops a range of social science skills, such as analysing data from various sources, crafting persuasive arguments, and communicating effectively. This prepares graduates for diverse careers in government, charitable organisations, and the commercial sector. Core modules include Degree Core Competences, Placement Support, Thinking Sociologically, Gender, Race, and Class: Social Differentiation and Stratification, British Society, and Contemporary Social Problems. Note that modules are subject to final approval and potential changes for 2025/26; students should check the university website for updates.
