Our BA in Modern Languages and English Language invites students to explore the central role of language in human society. This flexible programme allows you to study a core modern language—such as French, German, Italian, or Spanish—alongside English language modules, with options for introductory courses in languages like Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese (Mandarin), or others, subject to availability.Delivered by experts from the Departments of Languages and Cultures and English Language and Applied Linguistics, the course provides a solid foundation in language mechanics and usage within a vibrant, multilingual community. You will learn from internationally recognised researchers in areas including linguistics and translation, supported by outstanding teaching—98% of students rated staff highly in the 2023 National Student Survey. Core modules encompass topics like Sounds, Grammar and Meaning, Sociolinguistics, and language-specific studies, though all are subject to final approval for 2025/26.
